In autumn 2025, Bergen Municipality will begin an essential and comprehensive upgrade of Nina and Edvard Grieg's villa at Troldhaugen.

The villa closed on 15 August 2025.

The newly restored villa is scheduled to reopen to the public for the 2026 summer season.

Please note: Troldhaugen will be open on days with events and concerts. The park area is always accessible.

‘The villa of Nina and Edvard Grieg is one of Norway's most significant cultural heritage sites, Bergen's foremost historical house and a major destination for music lovers from around the world. We are delighted that Bergen Municipality is securing Troldhaugen for future generations. The project also provides us the opportunity to review and rethink parts of the visitor experience,’ explains Petter Snare, the Director of Kode.

What’s happened so far?

The curators of music at Kode have already catalogued the entire collection at Troldhaugen and are continuously updating the museum's collection database.

‘Our collection specialists will oversee the move in close cooperation with the Conservation Department in Salhus, ensuring the safest possible handling of all historical artefacts. There are also a number of non-historical objects in the villa that are less complicated to remove. The work ahead of us is complex, but fascinating from a professional standpoint,’ says Christian Grøvlen, Director of Music and the Composer Homes in Kode.

What’s happens next?

The work that will most affect visitors is taking place on the villa’s ground floor. During the winter, Kode carried out a detailed inspection with the Conservation Department, who provided recommendations for the transportation and any necessary treatment of interiors and objects.

The museum’s goal is to keep the villa open for as long as possible. However, work on the ground floor will have to begin in August, and from 16 August 2025 the villa will be closed to the public.

A temporary storage facility will be set up to house the largest objects until the villa reopens. Bergen Municipality has scheduled construction to begin on 1 September.

Further information about the construction process will be provided at a later date.
