Join the curator-led tour of the extensive exhibition Nordmandsdalen, which explores art, power, and materials during the era of absolutism in Denmark-Norway in the 18th century.

King Frederik V established a sculpture park at Fredensborg Palace between 1764 and 1784, featuring 70 statues representing the Norwegian, Sámi, and Faroese peoples.

The park, Nordmandsdalen, is often referred to as the first “democratic” project in Danish-Norwegian art history, as the statues depict a wide range of “common people” rather than the powerful elites of society.

A lesser-known aspect of Nordmandsdalen, explored in this curator-led tour, is that the project originated in Bergen, where postal carrier Jørgen C. Garnaas (1723–1798) created a series of wooden dolls that served as the basis for the park’s sculptures.

The exhibition traces how Garnaas’ figures traveled from Bergen to the King’s Copenhagen, transforming from wood to ivory, sandstone, and the finest porcelain.

The tour is led by Morten Spjøtvold, curator of craft and design.

Free tickets are available at the reception in Permanenten on the same day.

The tour will be held in English.
